(Un)happy Hour: How Your Favorite Martini is Aging You

Sipping on a martini can make us feel glamorous, but can indulging in just one drink affect the way we look? The answer might make you think twice before attending your next happy hour.
“When you drink an alcoholic beverage, it can cause blood vessels to dilate on the face, leaving you suddenly with a splotchy and red appearance,” said NYC dermatologist Dr. Samer Jaber, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai. We caught up with him to find out more on how one celebratory night out can affect your skin.
It gives you wrinkles. Consumption dehydrates your skin. When your outer layer is dry, wrinkles are more visible, causing you to look older than you actually are.
You lose your glow. Alcohol deprives your body of fluids, leaving your skin with a tired, dry, and dull appearance. When coming home late, you’re more likely to skip your skincare routine, which plays a big role in maintaining a healthy complexion.
It can worsen pre-existing skin conditions. Hangover food wreaks havoc on our skin. We all have our own hangover cure – greasy foods like a triple cheese pizza being a major one. Unfortunately the snacks that make us feel better often generate cystic acne flares.
Scary truths — but they won’t stop everyone from indulging in martinis! Wondering what you can do prior to happy hour(s) to keep you radiant and recognizable in the morning? “Always have at least one glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have,” says Dr. Jaber. “This will counteract the dehydrating effects of alcohol.”
Cheers to that! But if you ever forget to reach for H2O, follow this beauty hangover cure instead.
