Top 6 Style Trends to Invest in for Fall
The fall 2013 runways at New York Fashion Week were flooded with style excellence. Designers pulled out all the stops for their upcoming offerings, and while we’re certainly ready for spring, the new fashions now have us pining for autumn. Be sure to check out the video above to see Danielle Bernstein's recap of NYFW for weworewhat.com. From Urban Street to Tomboy Sexy, she broke down the styles you'll want to wear this spring!
DIY's own team of editors were also on-site for NYFW, and pulled together six of the most popular trends to emerge from Lincoln Center. Some are old favorites, while others are new ones itching to make an everlasting impact on our wardrobes.
Mixed Media: The combination of bold textiles was one of the biggest trends we saw on the runways at NYFW. Labels like Tommy Hilfiger, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Victoria Beckham, and Jason Wu paraded models down the catwalk donning carefully crafted pieces comprised of two or more statement fabrics. The look was bold, eye-catching, and certainly not for the fashion faint of heart. One of our favorite pieces was a trench coat from Beckham’s collection that boasted a plaid, wool top and a cobalt blue leather bottom. Amazing.
Prints: Mark our words: Prints will be everywhere this fall … and we mean everywhere. Labels like Diane von Furstenberg, Nanette Lepore, and Tommy Hilfiger featured plaid, and animal prints within their fall collections. Helmut Lang went heavy with gorgeous geometric patterns, inspired by the works of Picasso and Richard Prince. Some even went head-to-toe with the look, like Kate Spade with a beautiful all jacquard number.
Fur: The luxe look was featured in a slew of collections by way of shrugs, vests, capes, and trim. BCBGMAXAZRIA debuted chic multi-colored fur items, while labels such as Carmen Marc Valvo and and Prabal Gurung opted for colorful, plush coats and snoods.
Oversized Jackets & Capes: These silhouettes will prove to be the choice outerwear options for fall. The oversized jacket made an appearance at the shows of Narciso Rodriguez and 3.1 Phillip Lim, while capes reigned supreme throughout the Derek Lam and Victoria Beckham presentations. Cropped leather capes were debuted at the BCBGMAXAZRIA showing, which lended a high-end touch to the ever-popular biker jacket.
Leather: The chic fabric played a huge role in fashion last season, and according to the industry’s leading designers, it’s sticking around for fall. Leather tops, bottoms and dresses flooded the catwalks of NYFW, providing us with the desired edge we crave from fall fashion. We fell in love with an asymmetrical leather number from Altuzarra that featured sexy zipper detailing and a thigh-high slit.
The Beanie: Behold, the new ‘it’ accessory for fall 2013 ladies and gents. The grunge-like hat was seen on the runways of labels such as DKNY, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Tommy Hilfiger, and Victoria by Victoria Beckham. Designers proved that the urban piece can be paired with everything from a red carpet-worthy gown to a casual getup like jeans and a bomber jacket. We can’t wait to give this look a shot.
