Between the high heels, designer clothes and exotic travel, the life of a runway model seems pretty fabulous. But have you ever wondered if it takes more than just a pretty face? We went backstage at BCBGMaxAzria's model casting for 2013’s New York Fashion Week to find out.
“People think that it’s very glamorous and easy,” said Alana, a veteran of the runway. “But it’s a lot of work — being in shape, keeping your skin nice, having a lot of energy … it’s a job.” Grace, a model with a mesmerizing looks, said the job’s not all about your looks. “It’s a lot of preparing yourself physically and mentally for castings, and a lot of running around.”
As for the perks, seasoned runway model Herieth admits she loves the clothes and shoes she gets to try on. “It’s just amazing,” she said. Grace also noted her appreciation for the traveling the modeling industry permits. “You get to see some places you probably never even know existed on the globe.”
But before the fancy clothes and jet-setting, the girls have to make it through the model castings. “You put your heels on and you wait ‘til they call your name,” said Herieth. “You go inside, meet the casting directors … if they don’t like you … [you] go on with your day.”
Of course, there’s always the possibility of rejection. “Keep trying no matter what people say,” said Alana. “People are always going to say you’re not going to be able to do something and you can do it — you just have to put your mind to it.”
