Every now and then, we indulge ourselves in a splurge purchase (or two). However, the majority of our retail romps are budgeted affairs.
Staying under a certain dollar amount can be a difficult task, but we’ve learned some helpful tips along the way that have saved us from buyer’s remorse … and maxing out our credit cards.
Read on for five money-saving tips to implement on your next shopping excursion!
Bring cash. This is a surefire way to keep your spending under control. When you shop with a fixed amount, there is no way to go overboard. If you really want to hold yourself accountable, keep your CC at home. This way, you won’t be tempted to spend more once you run out of allotted funds.
Put it on hold. We’ve been known to impulsively invest in various pieces, but this is a great trick to keep frivolous buys at bay. If you’re on the fence about something, simply put it on hold — most stores will do so for 24 hours or until closing. This gives you the opportunity to walk away and think about your purchase. If you still want it hours afterwards, go back and get it! If you find yourself able to live without the said item, then congrats! You’ve just saved yourself some green.
Bring a friend. Shopping with your BFF is fun, but what’s really going to be beneficial is his or her opinion. Get a taste for how they feel about your new clothes, shoes, accessories, etc... Besides, you know they’ll be brutally honest with you, too.
Shop in heels. According to research conducted by scientists at the Brigham Young University, wearing shoes and apparel that increases ones awareness of balance leads to smarter decisions and lowers the likelihood of impulsiveness. Duly noted.
Plan your outfit. Far too many times, we’ve slipped into something in the dressing room and bought it because we thought we’d wear it eventually. To this day, many of those threads hang in our closets with tags still attached. To avoid this wasteful habit, plan where you’ll wear this potentially new piece. On date night? To the movies? Perhaps to brunch with the girls? Whatever floats your boat. Just make sure you have an exact occasion in mind to show off your new duds.
