Model Call: American Apparel Search for Transgender/Transsexuals

American Apparel isn’t one to shy away from controversial ad campaigns, and their latest project called for “Transgendered/Transsexual models.”
The open call was posted on the brand’s Instagram account, and asked “Transgendered/Transsexual” models ages 16 and up to stop by their Chelsea store in New York City last Sunday (August 25) to try out. No experience necessary! This isn’t their first time using transgender models — most notably the brand used Isis King from “American’s Next Top Model.”
While American Apparel is known for their pro-LGBT support in both their ads and clothes, some activists had a problem with the posting. According to the Huffington Post, AA should have said “transgender” rather than “transgendered,” because the latter implies the person had a choice in the matter.
Never the less, we can expect some intriguing ads in the near future. Stay tuned.
