EXCLUSIVE: Sofia Vergara Talks Kmart Collection & Dressing Her Famous Curves

Take a cue from Sofia Vergara — showing off your curves is in.
The “Modern Family” star has never been shy about flaunting her figure. In fact, there's been a few occasions where we couldn’t quite pin down how she stayed inside those tight dresses.
Yet, she does (besides that one Emmy incident), and her no-shame fashion sense is spreading like wildfire. Sofia believes women of every shape and size have something to show off — and it’s time to step up to the plate.
“Looking like a million bucks isn’t about how much the clothes actually cost,” she said. “It’s all about knowing how to dress for your body and what looks good on you.”
Granted the Emmy-nominated actress could make headlines in a garbage bag, she realized the importance of affordable fashions at an early age when she immigrated to the US as a young, divorced mother. She applied that knowledge to her namesake collection with Kmart and since then, has been admired for her ability to design fabulous clothes on a budget. With a head-turning sportswear range, functionally chic work options, and sexy party dresses, the line reflects Sofia's humble, yet exotic approach to getting dressed every morning.
Need more reasons to love the Colombian bombshell? We caught up with Sofia to chat about her curve-embracing style, hear her advice when it comes to covering up (or stripping down), and find out how she manages to eat cheeseburgers and still look so good.
Women of all shapes and sizes look up to you for your ability to accentuate certain curves while hiding others. What’s your style mantra?
My mantra is accentuate your best qualities. If you have great legs, then show them off, If your legs aren’t so great, wear tights and flaunt a different feature that you love.
How did you translate that mindset into your work as a designer?
My Kmart line is made for every size of woman. The pleating, stitching and details are made to make the waist look tight and to hide certain areas that some women may want to hide. But if you are a size two the clothes will still look great!
Your line is very budget-friendly, but you still look like a million bucks wearing it. Growing up, did you always have a fondness for fashion and how did you learn to live stylishly within your means?
Looking like a million bucks is not about how much the clothing actually costs. It is all about knowing how to dress your body and what looks good on you. I have always been interested in fashion and watching the trends. But of course I didn’t always have that much money when I was growing up and that is why I wanted to make my line affordable for everyone.
What’s your advice for women who use clothes to cover up rather than stand out?
Never be afraid to wear a bold color and accentuate your curves. Use clothes to draw attention to whatever part of the body you want people to look at.
We had the opportunity to meet you last week and your body’s even more insane in person — yet, you still eat cheeseburgers. Is it just those Colombian genes?
Of course I have been blessed with great genes, but I do work very hard at staying fit. I work out a lot so I can eat what I like and enjoy life. It’s all about moderation!
