She's a mom, a TV fashionista, and breast cancer survivor, and at a recent luncheon in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in New York City, Giuliana Rancic graciously opened up about being all three.
During an exclusive interview with DIY Fashion, the E! personality got candid about her own diagnosis, and offered up her one piece of advice for women currently fighting the disease.
"Before I was diagnosed I was pretty diligent when it came to going to the gym and eating super healthy, and only eating dessert a couple times a week — now I probably have dessert five nights a week. I go to the gym twice a week. I do what I need to do, but I also want a good quality of life." As for for what that means, G told us, "Instead of being on a treadmill, I'd rather be with my son."
As for how it changed her outlook on beauty, she explained, "There was definitely a long period of time where I didn't recognize who I was anymore. It wasn't until I went back to work at E! that I got my hair and makeup done and my wardrobe, and when I looked in the mirror I saw myself again — I recognized myself again. I think that's so important."
Giuliana agrees that sense of self is just as crucial to others fighting the disease. "Like this website CureDiva, they have resources where you can buy wigs, and head scarves, and beauty products and they give you that advice. Which to some might think it's vanity, but there's no vanity about that, it's not about trying to look a certain way as it is about look the way you used to look ... and there's nothing wrong with that."
On the topic of getting back to life she knew pre-diagnosis, Rancic admittedly had some reservations. "I thought "Am I really going to be able to report on celebrities and talk about fashion? Do I even care about that stuff anymore?' It was really time, getting back into the grove I thought 'Hey, why not?' I'm laughing again, I'm talking about fashion and trends and taking my mind off of this other stuff. It's been really good."
Lastly, the star extended her thoughts on how to cope with being diagnosed. Her helpful tip to women? What her husband, Bill Ranic, likes to call the 99 cent solution. "Go buy a [99 cent] legal pad, and make a list of the pros and cons of whatever you're debating. We did that with the mastectomy when we were trying to figure that out. As soon as we put pen to paper, it wasn't as bad as we thought. We were able to go back to that the next day and make a decision."
