Designers weren’t just making statements with their collections at New York Fashion Week — they wowed us with their cosmetic game, as well!
Striking makeup trends emerged from the runways at Lincoln Center, and we’re here to let you in on the top six looks you need to perfect for fall.
Bold Lips: Bright red and seductive oxblood hues saturated the NYFW runways … again. Models at the Alice + Olivia, BCBGMAXAZRIA, and Vera Wang presentations rocked the vibrant colors proudly. To wear this trend for fall, be sure to pair it with a neutral, toned-down eye.
Braids: Braids were everywhere during NYFW, but we're not talking about your normal, run-of-the-mill braid. Oh no. Designers reinvented the popular ‘do, and gave it sexy, modern flare. Christian Siriano’s models donned fishtail braids along the sides of their heads that were then crisscrossed in the back and pinned. The ladies at Badgley Mischka’s Fall 2013 presentation rocked a French braid that lead into a high bun, while the Alice + Olivia label opted for gorgeous braided halos. Obsessed.
Full Eyebrows: Big brows are sticking around and we couldn’t be happier. We love the strong and structured look they add to the face — not the mention the fabulous framing power they have. To shape them perfectly, use a spoolie brush and comb upwards and out. Then, fill in with product. Click here for more information on how to fill in your eyebrows properly.
Dramatic Eyes: This fall, let your peepers do the talking! We saw a slew of statement eye-makeup looks at NYFW, but two of our faves were spotted at the Rebecca Minkoff and Michael Kors’ showings. Minkoff paraded her ladies down the runway rocking cobalt blue liner from Stila. The look was striking, and certainly one we can’t wait to try out. Kors upped the ante on the smoky eye by adding some drama and darkness to the cosmetic creation. Tip: Each of these looks should be paired with a nude lip.
Contouring: Designers like Carolina Herrera and Christian Siriano chose to accentuate their models’ cheekbones as part of their runway-ready look. The final product? A strong, structured profile that certainly brought noteworthy drama to Fall 2013. We spoke with MAC makeup artist Polly Osmond backstage at Siriano’s show, who said to try, "sucking in your cheeks" to create that perfectly chiseled appearance. She also advises to use a product that's "not too grey [or] orange" along your cheek bones, and "always blend [the product] into the foundation so it doesn't look too line-y."
Sleek Strands: Models at the Rebecca Minkoff and DKNY shows rocked pin-straight strands down the runway. Michael Kors also opted for the sleek look, but had his ladies’ hair tied back into chic ponytails. To achieve this style for fall, simply glide a shine serum through your tresses for a catwalk-worthy glisten.
